Recoverite – new formula with MCT oil: no foam, no added sugar
By Steve Born
If a product can be improved, we improve it
A few years ago we replaced the corn-derived maltodextrin in Recoverite with maltodextrin made from tapioca (cassava), because we consider it the superior, more easily digested carbohydrate source. We made the same change in a few other Hammer fuels. As Brian Frank, founder and CEO of Hammer Nutrition, puts it: “My policy is simple: any time I can improve a product, I will.”
Recently, a few customers told us that a thin layer of foam formed on top of mixed Recoverite. The drink still mixed perfectly, but we don’t brush feedback like that aside: we went looking for a fix.
The answer is MCT oil (medium-chain triglycerides) – a rapidly absorbed type of fat that the body readily converts into energy. Added in a small amount, it eliminates the foam, and the drink now tastes creamier and fuller.
Right now – at the end of the race season, in the transition period and at the start of winter base training – is a great time to get your post-workout recovery dialled in: build the habit now and you’ll start spring from a stronger foundation.
Both versions are available in our shop right now
In our online shop you’ll currently find Recoverite as two separate products:
- Recoverite (2.0) – the version made with tapioca (cassava) maltodextrin, without MCT oil;
- Recoverite – NEW formula – the new recipe described in this article, with MCT oil.
We’re switching over to the new formula gradually: for now, on the Recoverite – NEW formula page you can only buy the flavours and sizes that have already sold out in version 2.0. If your favourite flavour is no longer available in 2.0, look for it in the new formula – and vice versa.
The “no foam, no added sugar” Recoverite
The first and most important step of recovery is to refill your body’s energy stores as soon as possible after training. That’s what Recoverite was made for – and we don’t believe any recovery drink prepares you better for your next workout or race. Here’s what’s inside:
- Complex carbohydrates, no added refined sugar. Many recovery drinks contain glucose, sucrose or fructose; Recoverite doesn’t. Its carbohydrate source is tapioca-derived maltodextrin, which is easy to digest, gentle on the stomach and replenishes glycogen quickly.
- 100% whey protein isolate from grass-fed cows. One of the highest-quality, most bioavailable protein sources, with all nine essential amino acids, 10 g of protein and 2,030 mg of branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) per serving (2 scoops). Protein contributes to a growth in muscle mass and to the maintenance of muscle mass. To learn more about whey, see the Whey Protein page.
- Glutamine. The most abundant amino acid in muscle. It is involved in restoring glycogen stores and building muscle tissue, and it is one of the main energy sources for the cells lining the gut.
- Full electrolyte profile. Sodium, chloride, calcium, magnesium and potassium – to replace the minerals you lose in sweat during exercise. Magnesium and calcium contribute to normal muscle function, and magnesium also to electrolyte balance.
- Chromium chelate. A trace mineral that contributes to normal macronutrient metabolism and to the maintenance of normal blood glucose levels – an important helper for refuelling during recovery.
- L-carnosine. Acts as a buffer for acidic metabolites that build up during exercise, and is also known as an antioxidant after training.
- MCT oil (in the new formula). Eliminates the foam, makes the drink creamier and provides quickly usable energy.
What you gain with Recoverite
Taking in high-quality carbohydrates, protein and supporting nutrients right after training is an easy, effective way to boost your performance and fitness:
- Glycogen stores refilled for tomorrow’s workout. Train consistently and refuel consistently, and over time your muscles will store more and more fuel – which pays off on race day.
- Stronger muscles. Amino acids support muscle building, so over time you can handle more training volume and intensity.
- Less muscle soreness between workouts – so you start your next session fresher.
- More consistent training. When you recover well, you skip or cut back fewer workouts – and in the long run, that’s what matters most.
You can achieve all of this with one simple step: refuel promptly after training. What you eat or drink after a workout largely determines the quality of your recovery – “garbage in, garbage out” applies here too. Junk food, or drinks made with refined sugar, artificial ingredients, poor-quality protein and few recovery nutrients, won’t give your body what it needs.
In summary
Recoverite gives your body the carbohydrates, protein and other nutrients it needs for faster, more complete recovery. It’s no coincidence that it’s Hammer’s best-selling fuel. It flat out works – just make sure you never run out! Both Recoverite (2.0) and Recoverite – NEW formula are available in our shop; if you’re looking for a plant-based option, try Vegan Recoverite.
